Koper is the largest coastal city in Slovenia and an important port on the Adriatic Sea. First mentioned in 599 AD, the city boasts a rich Venetian heritage reflected in the architecture of its old town. The Praetorian Palace, a Venetian Gothic building from the 15th century, is one of the finest examples of Venetian architecture in Slovenia.
Tito Square, the central city square, is surrounded by Renaissance and Baroque buildings. Koper is renowned for its quality wines — Malvasia and Refosco are indigenous varieties thriving in the Koper hinterland. The city was once an island, connected to the mainland by landfill in the 19th century. The old town center was declared a cultural monument in 2012.
