Slovenia has more than 500 castles, manors, and fortified ruins. For a country smaller than New Jersey, that is an extraordinary density of medieval architecture. Five of these castles appear in our coloring book — each one chosen for its dramatic setting, historical significance, and visual appeal. Here is a closer look at each one, and why they deserve a place in your coloring collection.
1. Predjama Castle — Built Into a Cliff
Predjama is the castle that stops you mid-sentence. Built directly into the mouth of a 123-meter cave, it has clung to its limestone cliff since the 13th century. The castle is famous for the legend of Erazem of Predjama, a robber baron who defied the Habsburg siege for a year by receiving supplies through a secret tunnel at the back of the cave. He was eventually betrayed — killed by a cannonball while sitting in the privy.
In the coloring book, Predjama is one of the most detailed illustrations. The interplay of natural rock and man-made walls creates a challenging, rewarding page. You color not just a building but a geological formation.
2. Snežnik Castle — The Forest Manor
Tucked into the forests of the Notranjska region, Snežnik is one of the best-preserved Renaissance castles in Slovenia. It functioned as a hunting lodge for aristocrats and still contains its original furniture, weapons, and Egyptian artifacts collected by its 19th-century owners. The castle sits beside a small lake, and in autumn, the surrounding forest turns gold and copper.
The illustration captures the castle’s reflection in the lake — a symmetrical composition that invites careful, meditative coloring. The surrounding trees offer opportunities for experimenting with seasonal color palettes.
3. Rihemberk Castle — The Karst Sentinel
Perched above the Vipava Valley on the edge of the Karst plateau, Rihemberk (also known as Branik) commands views that stretch to the Italian border. Built in the 13th century, it served as a military outpost controlling the pass between the Adriatic and the interior. The castle has been partially restored and hosts cultural events during summer.
The coloring page emphasizes the castle’s dramatic hilltop position. The surrounding landscape — terraced vineyards, stone villages, dry Karst grassland — provides rich textural variety for coloring.
4. Turjak Castle — The Knight’s Stronghold
Turjak was the seat of the Auersperg family, one of the most powerful noble houses in Carniola. The castle witnessed a famous battle in 1471 when Ottoman raiders were defeated here — an event commemorated in Slovenian folklore. The ruins sit atop a wooded hill south of Ljubljana, surrounded by forests where bears still roam.
In the book, Turjak appears as a romantic ruin — towers rising from vegetation, walls half-consumed by ivy. The illustration rewards patience and attention to organic detail.
5. Škofja Loka Castle — Above the Medieval Town
Škofja Loka is one of the oldest towns in Slovenia, and its castle overlooks a remarkably intact medieval center. The castle now houses a museum, but its external walls and towers remain impressively fortified. The town below — with its stone bridge, painted house facades, and narrow lanes — is often called the most beautiful small town in Slovenia.
The coloring page shows the castle from the valley below, with the town’s rooftops cascading down the hillside. It is one of the most complex pages in the book — and one of the most satisfying to complete.
